Vintage soul opens the High Noon Patio season with The Periodicals and the Sean Michael Dargan Trio

In September 2022 I went to the High Noon Saloon to see a band called The Periodicals. I was excited to see them because I’d heard they had a lot of energy, a vibrant lead singer, and a brass section to make their soul-pop songs shine.
I was blown away by their show! I said out loud that I wanted to play my vintage, Northern soul records before one of their gigs some day.
While I love polka music and enjoy playing it on the radio and at events, I also want to share soul music similar to what inspired British dancers to embrace the fast American soul music of the 60s. Like the Northern Soul scene in England that very much continues today, too many songs by Black American artists didn’t become top-40 hits even though the music, lyrics and vocals are spectacular. Like polka, I want new artists to hear songs that could inspire them to dance and explore more artists’ work.
On May 26, 2023, I got my chance to play my favorite records before the first patio concert of the season at the High Noon Saloon. The Periodicals and the Sean Michael Dargan Trio graciously let me set up my turntables and play some tunes.
The best part of DJing records is when you forget there is an audience and you just dance and sing along to the songs for your own enjoyment. I saw smiles and tapping toes among the people on the patio, but it was easy for me to close my eyes to get swept away by the music. I hope we can do it again soon.
